It’s been a very long time since I’ve posted a true Andrew update. It’s hard to believe we’ve only been home for a year and a half – it seems as though it’s always been the four of us. I wanted to take a few minutes and bullet point some random thoughts. Of course, when I say “random”, I mean “random”. :-)
- Andrew is eating us out of house and home. I keep thinking we’ll be seeing a big growth spurt but I think Andrew’s growth spurt is 1/4” at a time! He’s up to 41.25” and about 40 pounds. He’s still the smallest in his class, but appears to be catching up.
- Andrew had a moment (or two) about a month ago where he was a big old klutz. He was bouncing on the chair in the living room only to land on the edge of the coffee table with the side of his face. That night, while running, he ran cheek first into a metal bench. On Monday, when I dropped him at Pre-K, I was sure to tell the teacher what happened so she didn’t call DFACS. Well, that afternoon, while running around the playground he tripped and fell and hit his head. It suddenly dawned on me. “Self?”, I thought. “When is the last time you had Andrew’s feet measured?” That afternoon we found out he was wearing a size 8.5W and needed a 10.5W. Hellooooo?? I sure hope none of you are planning on applying for “Mother of the Year” because I totally have it locked.
- “I’m really serious. Serious. Really. Really serious, okay?” One of Andrew’s FAVORITE things to say lately.
- Andrew will be 5 in August. Andrew will be going to Kindergarten in August. Mommy is a bit unsettled about that decision primarily because he seems too little (cut-off is 5 as of 9/1 and Andrew turns 5 on 8/22). Jane did a post on this about her little guy and I could likely devote a whole post to it as well… maybe one day!
- “Awwwww… man!” Another one of his favorite things to say. Wonder where he gets that from??
- Keith wants me to mention that Andrew is inquisitive. Not your normal “why?” type of inquisitive, but he dissects everything. There is no explanation that is good enough because he finds a hole. It makes for funny conversations!
- At school, they are working on sight words. Words like come, make, run, blue, said, look, etc… We quizzed him the other night and I’d say out of about 30 words he got 6 wrong. Not too shabby!
- Andrew loves to read books. We read each night before bed and it’s my favorite time of day and his as well! Keith’s books are always silly and the giggles that come out of both of them are contagious. Recently, I decided I wanted to find a good chapter book to read Andrew. I randomly picked up “Ralph and the Motorcycle” by Beverly Cleary and we started reading. I am amazed at Andrew’s ability to sit through a pictureless chapter and listen to the story. Outside of that, his comprehension is fabulous. We talk about each chapter when it’s over and then the next day before we begin the new one. It’s been a lot of fun to read!
- We’re working on learning to brake on Andrew’s bike. I think, in the next few weekends, we’ll most likely take the training wheels off!
- Keith and Andrew have been playing baseball in the backyard. I think we might have a little slugger! :-)
- Andrew still can’t blow his nose but just recently learned to snort like a pig (and thinks it’s the funniest thing… ever!) So you can share in this rare talent, we recorded a short video. Please ignore the fingerpaintings on my kitchen walls - we're wild and crazy around here! (You can also notice Andrew's strabismus (slight cross-eyed) in this video. He was tired, close to the camera and didn't have glasses on - does it every time. Of course, in my race to secure "Mother of the Year", I haven't been patching him like I should be.)
And that’s about all the randomness I can muster! I need to do another post about the conversations we’ve recently had about adoption (Andrew and I). I sometimes wonder how much he remembers from his days in Russia!
Toodles!
Becky
P.S. Andrew got up at 6:30 this morning. It's Saturday. Please tell me we'll eventually get to 8:00 or so. I'm a mama who NEEDS sleep!

HA!!! Okay, next time tell me to put my coffee down before watching one of Andrew's videos. That was absolutely hilarious! I'm still laughing. Of course, Cubby watched the video and guess what he remembered??
BOAT! Yeah, he knows you're supposed to take him out on yours sometime!
We definitely need to get the boys together. I'm sorry I've been out of touch. It's been crazy lately. Let's just a pick a day and do it! How long does it take you to get to the Aquarium? We're going tomorrow (3/7) if you don't already have plans.
And oh my goodness, I can't believe he's going to be 5! Cubby will be 3 in a few weeks. Where does time go???
Hugs to all of you - can't wait to see you again.
Karyn, Cubby (and oh, Norm!) :-)
Hilarious!!!
By the way, we have the SAME CHILD!!!!
Oh Man - I hear it about a gillion times a day - that and I'm BAT MAN!!!! Ugh! Can't wait til this passes!
I need to get my Coop on video too - this age is absolutely fabulous!
We have decided to do KG twice because of size, maturity, b-day and of course, the Russia-thing.
Nearly 7 years later and I am still wondering if I'll ever sleep past 7am on the weekend....LOL! Good luck with that! :)
Are you considering holding Andrew back another year before K? We held Avery (a 9/23 baby) this year-and CAN NOT possibly be happier about our decision- she is truly a different person than she was 6 months ago. Academically, she was there- but she is small and was definitely more of a "follower"- she has hit her stride and truly has grown up sooo much! Call me if you are considering it- we were sooo on the fence about it...and had lots of advice on both sides of the issue.

Becky- My favorite part was "Thank you for coming to the snorting show!" What a hoot!
I know you'll get lots of advice on Andrew and K. We held our bio son back and it was such a good decision. My girlfriend had one daughter she held back and one she sent. The one she held back is such a leader. The one she sent definitely struggled more with keeping up. It doesn't seem like much but 6 -9 months is such a difference in development and actual ability. Her daughter struggled a bit in keeping up with learning and reading etc. She was 5 around the same time as Andrew, and some of those kids were turning 6 in September, Oct and Nov. (That's a big difference).
Anyway, I share that just to add another perspective. Only you know what Andrew is ready for and capable of!
Oh and BTW-I totally tied you on the Mom of the Year Award! I did the same thing with Small Fry's shoes when we first came home!
Hey Becky,
That video is just priceless!!-He is just so darn cute!!!
Hope you all are having a great weekend!...Teresa
Sounds like he is doing so well!
Ahh, the great kindergarten debate! So glad you mentioned it. We're currently pulling our hair out trying to make the right decision on this one. I'm one stressed out mama over this. Currently leaning toward waiting another year, but that changes on any given day...
5, really? Are you sure? Andrew can't be turning 5 this August. It just doesn't seem possible. I cannot believe he will be in Kindergarten this fall. Where does the time go?
We just passed our 2 year mark for being home (March 12th). Of course, it got overlooked as I was just home from the hospital (so, watch out as I'm in the running for mother of the year...didn't you see the gash on J's face?)
Thank you again for your comments during our most recent adoption and the gift. It meant so much to know you guys were thinking of us. I can't wait to get our new gang together.
I'm still reading the rest of your blog, but wanted you to know that I'm thinking of you!!
Sight words???!!! Seriously??? I truly need to get with the program on that one.
So how far are you from Panama City? Feel like a late summer trip to the beach?
If he is reading sight words...send him to Kinder. I know...I have 4 kids. He sounds ready.
