Tantrums, Elephants and Alligators

What a weekend it has been!!

Saturday was filled with tears, timeouts, more tears, more timeouts and me saying "Keith, please take him somewhere - anywhere" through MY tears! Andrew was a PILL. I'm not sure if that is the right word or a strong enough word. It started Friday night when, at Chuck3Cheese he chose to throw himself on the floor because he didn't want to leave. I calmly picked him up, took him to the bathroom while he was screaming and then out to the car - still screaming. He went right to bed and the Saturday morning started out okay and then came mid-morning.

We made a parenting 101 mistake - doing something on Friday night. While Friday's are "celebratory" nights for those of us working, they are still run-of-the-mill nights for a little boy who had a busy day at daycare! Chuck3Cheese was overstimulation for a completely exhausted boy. So, we've learned our lesson which is part of it, right? Saturday morning was probably a carry over of Friday night. I was just talking to my dad and he had a good point - we need to just hang out at home instead of always "doing". We can still exhaust him and get out all of his energy without going places. Such a smart dad I have! :-)

So, we'll try that next weekend... but this weekend, despite the tantrums, we had so much fun. My friend, Margaret, got Andrew tickets to the circus for his birthday! He had a great time - loved the elephants especially when they sat on each other! Silly elephants! :-) Here is a pre-circus picture with Aunt Mandy and his "magic elephant wand" and a post-circus picture with Mommy.

After the circus, we went to the county fair for a bit. It was the last weekend in town. Andrew loved the fair. Loved the rides and getting to pet the cows and the goats! He was such a good boy while we were out and about - good listening and in a great mood which was such a pleasant change from the beginning of the day. He rode on an alligator and a monkey, a helicopter and a caterpillar! Doesn't get much better than that, does it?

We came home to Papa and Uncle Rob working on the playset out back! Keith bought this for Andrew about a week after we got home and it's been in boxes since. We've just been so darn busy - no time to put it together! This weekend Keith and Rob busted it out! It just needs the finishing touches! Andrew will definitely be loving this for years to come!

( I know this isn't Andrew, but it was just such a cute picture of Angel - couldn't resist!)

After working on the playset was bathtime, dinner time and then bedtime! Apparently somewhere in there Andrew decided it was tool-time! Nice outfit, huh? This picture is totally going into the "Embarrass Andrew Later in Life" folder which is kept especially for the senior yearbook ads, girlfriends, his wedding and his own kids! :-) (someday far, far away of course!)

After a busy weekend, we finally got the boy to sleep with his special blanket that Florida Grandma made him. He loves to snuggle with it - especially when he cons dad into sleeping in our bed every once in a while!

So... in summary it was a busy weekend - too busy. Sunday we went to church. Alex's mom's family had the organs at church restored in her memory. Andrew was great - well behaved, patient and a charmer. Alex did well too. As much as it was probably a sad reminder for him and a chance to miss his mom he seemed to be in good spirits. Of course, all of the high school girls that flocked to him the second he walked into church may have been why! :-)

I've learned some lessons this weekend - less is more and know that it's okay to admit you need a break and a good cry (another post on this later in the week). It was also a good reminder that we HAVE only been home for 2 months and as much as it feels like it's been forever, we're all still in a learning process and will ultimately figure out what makes each other tick.

Hope everyone has a great week!
Becky

Good lesson learned! I do want to share though about the crying fit when leaving Chuck E Cheese. Yea it was probably a combination of overstimulation and being a typical 3 yr old. I rememebr a good friend and mentor who told me of her son (at the time 3), who did not want to leave the pool. She had to carry him under her arm while he was kicking and screaming the whole time...She plastered a smile on her face and waved goodbye to everyone..saying sweetly.."It's time for a nap!" lol! I have had the same experience with one of my own children. lol! Not too fun at the time, but humorous to look back on later in life. :-)

You all certainly had a fun weekend!

Becky,

I had to giggle when I read this as ChuckECheese was never one of my favorite places to go when the kids were little! Great place for kids, but parental torture when it's time to leave. As for Andrew not wanting to leave HMM I think that would be close to me not wanting to leave a tennis match at Wimbledon! I can't help but to think how much Andrew's life has changed in the last few months. What a doll!

Hugs!

We took Diego to ChuckECheese once for a birthday party, but he is too little to enjoy all that stuff and I think we was more freaked out to see soo many people and stuff!

Andrew seems to be doing soo well and looks soo great in the pictures! Hey, Diego has been at home for 6 months and we are still trying to figure out things! You guys are just doing amazing!

Phew...I am tired just reading all the stuff you crammed into one weekend! Thats a ton. Although I'm not one to talk as we took Mateo to his first college football game (a 7pm start - bedtime is at 7:30) this weekend. He did great but its taken a couple of days to get back into our regular routine.

Of course he'll get settled just about the time we get ready to leave again this weekend. And a longer trip this time means harder time going back to daycare next week when we get back. Keep your fingers crossed for me that the Beau still has their pool open.

Breakfast one day this week?

Wow! Great pictures!

I'm sure the temper tantrums will temper with time. Children have to test you. It is part of the package deal. :-)

Great weekend!

Ahhh...Chuck E Cheese. For some reason its 'closed' in my town. Funny thing that there are always cars in the parking lot...must be overflow parking for the mall :)
Yeah, we've been there, can't leave without tantrums (Sarah included). Glad that Andrew liked the Elephants! The playset looks awesome!

What a fun filled weekend - can we come live with you!!! The circus sounds like tons of fun and what kid doesn't want a magic elephant wand?!?!? I think there are lots of weekends of tears, fun, smiles etc with little ones!! You made it through another one!!

He is only 3. You don't have to go everywhere, all the time. Remember what you start is going set what will be expected later on. Remember when you entertained yourself as a child? Don't fall into that trap that you have to go & do something every weekend. You will wear yourself out. No one is taking him away, you have his whole life to show him the world & it's pleasures. PS. Let Friday night be youre/Keith's night out. Andrew has lots of sitters there. Make time for yourselves. It's important.

Sounds like you had a busy weekend. We too have made the mistake of taking Kaden out on night after daycare thinking we can go to dinner. Wrong!! Total tantrum! Live and Learn I guess. Belive me I have had my moments of crying too. One night Aaron came home Kaden had just gone to sleep but it took me like 2 hours to get him down. After he was asleep I broke down crying b/c it can be so hard sometimes! Good luck and hang in there.

Dang, I could have skipped the scrapbook weekend and come to Atlanta... I didn't know y'all had so much to do down there! :)

Can you call me and tell me how to imbed the link into the blog post... I cannot seem to figure it out and it's driving me bananas! I read your instructions on Barb's blog, but I don't have a little globe sign on my toolbar. GRRRR!

And by the way, I snuck a peek at your "test" blog, I LOVE it! :)

Oh yeah, by the way... I got your comment about meeting halfway, I'm totally up for it. Let's plan a weekend sometime in the winter when my hubby has recovered from last weekend (and football season is over.) Honestly, this place we went is right off I-24 and it would be fun to get a group of girls together and do it there... It's 1.5 hours for me, so that would probably mean 2.5 for you? Anyway, I'll get around to calling you one of these days and we'll figure it out.
