Memories

Most people usually start these big milestone blog posts out like "One year ago today..." but since I'm two days late and more than two dollars short, my post is going to have to start out a little differently. And here we go!

One year and two days ago, Keith and I walked into the Sonata Orphanage in Lubertsy, Russia with butterflies in our bellies. We were nervous, excited, horrified and elated to name a few of the millions of emotions flowing through us. I remember driving down the bumpy road to the orphanage thinking "what have I gotten myself into!" only to be pleasantly surprised when we walked in the front door of the homey orphanage.

At that point, we were told that little Vasa was down for his nap and we'd have to wait a while to see him. The sweet orphanage director allowed us to tip toe into his room to take a peek at him while he slept. There is absolutely nothing more sweet then seeing a child sleep and even sweeter - thinking and hoping that this child is going to be sleeping in your arms, your house, with you very, very soon.

Some of my favorite memories from that day: Seeing Andrew's little belly sticking out while the doctor examined him, watching him cling to his caregiver when he first saw us, playing Hungry Hungry Hippo and letting him win, seeing the amazement in his eyes when he figured out how to turn the noisy hammer on and off, feeding him cheerios for the first time and seeing him smile ever so slightly and pink tights and a princess sweatshirt... Oooooooo... I could go on and on and on!!

May 2009

We have quite the big boy on our hands, don't we?
I'll leave this blog post with a cute little conversation I had with Andrew tonight.
Becky: "Andrew, can you please take this bag and throw it in the blue trashcan?"
Andrew takes the bag and says... "Sure. And thank you so much for asking me so nicely, Mom."
Hehehe... apparently we've been working on asking nicely for things, huh? Good to know I've got a passing grade.
Off to bed!
Becky

I remember a year ago, waiting for the phone calls telling us all the details. So excited and happy for you both, for us all. It's hard to believe that it's been a whole year and that in just a few weeks/months he is going to be 4 years old. He truly is a sponge soaking up all the love, the language, America. I still believe like you that the disappointments, the moves, in the adoption process were directed from Above...little Vasa, Andrew was waiting just for our family. For those of you waiting, just take heart and reflect, we only see the underside of the quilt, God sees the Topside and our loved departed Ones see it. Congratulations Becky, Keith, Alex and the rest of the family for our jewel...Andrew.

Oh, I love how polite you and your boy are! That made me giggle and want to hug someone. I'm at work, so it's going to have to be my boss! Hope she doesn't mind! Maybe you can hug Andrew for me!!

Very nicely yours,

Col :-)

He is just absolutely precious!! I too, remember following along with you on your blog during your journey to Andrew. I was in the adoption process too at the time and I remember being even more excited and anxious to get our referral after reading about your awesome journey to Andrew. We have been home six months now with J, and it seems like yesterday we were in Russia with him, but then I look at him and he has grown so much, it seems like forever ago too! They grow up so fast, don't they? Congrats on your one year anniversay home! :)

What a difference a year makes for everyone involved! Isn't it wonderful?! It's hard to believe it was a year ago today that we were two airplans passing in the night (almost) with you returning from your first trip and us headed over.

I LOVE the photo of the Peanut's belly and stethoscope from a year ago!

I loved seeing these photos of Andrew. I'm not sure that I've seen them before...I'll have to look back. He has really grown over the last year. He looks so grown up!

Thanks for sharing your memories from one year ago. Amazing how quick the last year flew by!

LOVED the giggles! Sounds just like him!

Love the comment that we see the underside of the quilt and God sees the topside. WOW!

Loved seeing Andrew in May and marveled at his confidence, sense of security, and obvious love for you, Keith and Alex.
