The Calendar Project

When Andrew came home from Russia and started school, there was quite a bit of anxiety. It was a big change for him. Not only was it different than the orphanage, someplace he stayed and never left, but it also much different from being home with his new mom for the first two months. He was always questioning whether or not it was a "home day" or a "school day" and wasn't yet understanding the concept of 5 days of school and 2 days home.

I racked my brain trying to figure out how to make him feel better. I felt guilty about working full time, you know! Here was this little person, 2 months into his new world and he just wasn't too certain things were going to be okay. In order to make it fun and ease the anxiety, I thought it would be fun to get a monthly calendar, decorate it and then cross off the days as we went through the week. Thankfully, it worked like a charm!

When we first started, Andrew's only part in the calendar decorating was adding stickers and scribbles. Twelve months later and he's practicing his S's (school days) and H's (home days) all by himself! It's been such a great thing because we've been able to see how much he has learned and how quickly he's growing (boo hoo says this mommy!).

The hard work is done! Sticker time!

Look, Mom! I did it ALL BY MYSELF!
(A very common phrase in our house right now!)

The Masterpiece

We also use the calendar to mark special days, vacations and holidays. It makes "Can we go on vacation tomorrrrrowwww?" for the 100th time easier to answer. "Count the days on the calendar until you get to the "V". How many more days?" And voila... now we're practicing our counting. Moms are so darn sneaky...

Halloween... "UGH! That's too many days away" says Andrew.

There will come a time when we won't be decorating our calendars any more because Andrew will out grow it. Until then, I'll enjoy watching my little guy make his S's... even when he writes them backwards and upside down. :-)

LOVE the calendar idea! I think you hit the nail on the head when trying to figure out how to ease Andrew's transition. It took me a while to understand what he meant, when he said "today is an S Day" or "Today is an H day" but then it rang a bell! Great job, sista!

That's fantastic!! I think it's great that mom's can share their ideas through blogging to help out other mom's. We may have to try this project!! I love that you can practice letters too!

Aaaaahhhh, what a great idea! I hope you are keeping the old calendars as a keepsake. Andrew is so smart, the letter "S" can be very challenging even for 2nd graders. He is really ahead of the game! (Can you tell I am just now catching up on your blog?)
