Absolutely Priceless
This Saturday we had Alex’s 16th birthday party at a hockey game. We reserved a suite and Alex invited about 25 of his closest friends – some from his old school (about 45 minutes away) and some from his new. If you can believe it, only 2 kids couldn’t make it. I think that goes to show what great friends he has!The past week, it has been interesting trying to coordinate drop-off and pick-up of these kids at the arena. I was so worried it would be a mess, but thankfully it went great! In lieu of gifts, we asked everyone to bring a donation for Kids In Need. The Kids In Need mission is to provide learning supplies for students whose academic success is threatened by poverty. Alex was spoiled rotten over Christmas and for his birthday, so it was time to give back!
In the suite we had pizza, chicken wings, popcorn, chips and salsa, ice cream cake and lots of other goodies. When we got the bill, I thought I was going to pass out. I glanced at the bottom line, added what I thought should be a tip, handed it to Keith to sign and then walked away. About 15 minutes later a light bulb came on in my head (a very, very BRIGHT light bulb) and I realized we tipped on the wrong amount. By that point, it was too late and our “suite captain” was $160 richer! In the grand scheme of things, I just let it go. Why fret over something you can’t change and besides we made that guys night! :-)
Anyhow, back to the game. Most of these kids had never seen a hockey game. I typed up “Hockey 101” rules so they could follow the game. In true Gladiator fashion, they got to see a great fight and lots of hard hitting action. I’ve never seen a group of boys sit still for so long! Between periods, they went and wandered the arena and one boy even got a girl’s phone number. :-) Boys will be boys!
Maximus, the Gladiator’s mascot, came to visit us as you can see above. These kids FREAKED OUT. Seriously. I can’t tell you how many of them wanted their picture taken with him. I couldn’t stop laughing. I even got them all together for the group picture without a SINGLE complaint! When my sister sends me the pictures, I’ll post a few more.
After the game (the Glads lost), we took 8 of the boys home with us to spend the night. 8 teenagers in a 2000 sq ft house with 2 adults (us), 3 dogs and 4 cats. Believe it or not, we had plenty of room! They had game systems set-up on every TV and just jammed away to Rock Band and Guitar Hero. And no, I didn’t get to sing. :-( They were told to go to bed by 5 (yes, 5am – they wanted to stay up all night, that was a compromise!)
Do you know what 8 16 year olds eat for breakfast? 30 eggs, 2 pounds of bacon (I could have made 3), a loaf of bread, a gallon of orange juice and a ½ gallon of milk. I kid you not. I just keep cracking eggs! I laughed at Keith when he bought two dozen but apparently he knew what he was doing!
It was the best birthday party we’ve ever had. These kids were so polite with their yes m’am and yes sirs. They were so grateful every time you fed them and they had the best time at the game. Most of them are planning on going to another hockey game once they all have their driver’s license. Hopefully, I've created monsters because I love hockey! :-)
I took a 3 hour nap on Sunday and even managed to get most of the laundry done! It was a good weekend, albeit a fast one! For those of you with little boys, in addition to saving for college, be sure to start a grocery savings account for when they are teenagers! Boys can eat – I saw it with my own eyes!!!
It’s amazing how much you can love a child even though you didn’t give birth to him. I am so blessed to have Alex in my life and I can’t wait for our little Russian Peanut to know what a wonderful big brother he has!

Love this post! What a great birthday idea. We will keep that in mind for future birthday parties. I cannot imagine the food bill. I know my sister nannied for a house of four or five children and their grocery bill was $500 per week. She said that a box of cereal or box of waffles was for one sitting. I couldn't believe it.
Glad you are busy during your wait! I think this week will bring great news...I just feel it!
Holy Cow and I mean HOLY COW!! You are my hero!! 30 eggs? I better re-budget my grocery bill for when we have a growing boy and all their friends over!!
I'm glad everyone had a good time and the drop off, pick ups went well also. I know you were worried about that.
Love the photo with all the boys and the mascot!!
Glad you made it through!
Wow, you are an awesome mom! That party seemed soooo fun - especially for teenage boys! (Gonna have to remember that for when ours get up there).
My mom used to say that my brother and his friends would eat a box of cookies and a gallon of milk just for a snack after school - UGH!
Sounds like fun! Good thing its not every weekend!! Hehe...
What an awesome day! Looks like a great bunch of guys. I agree with the food budget, even having a 4 year old boy who eats everything in sight is draining mine; I can only imagine what it will be like when he's a teen.
Sounds like you had a good time and Alex and his friends had an even better time. 30 eggs and 2 pounds of bacon! YIKES! But I gueass if you count on 3 or 4 eggs per boy that will do it!
what a great party. I bet they will all be talking about the great time they had in school this week.
Becky- What a great post! I just loved all of your descriptions! It sounds like it was a wonderful evening and you are definitely ready for when that little boy grows up! You guys did awesome! I was laughing as I read, "I just kept cracking eggs"! I bet each of those boys had a fantastic time!
What a great birthday party! You really had it all figured out! You are very creative! It sounds like Alex and his friends had a great time and that you all had fun, too! It sounds like you made a VERY big breakfast! I'm glad it went well! :)
I wanna live at your house....sounds like a blast. You are a fabulously fun mama!
So glad Alex's birthday party went so well. 25 boys! And we thought feeding All of our boys and their friends were something. You outdid us this weekend. See all the practice will be in good stead for when little peanut arrives. And I am so very PROUD of our oldest Grandson, the man you are helping him become, and the friends he has. Just proves the old saying about like attracting like. Great young men all. And like Ryan & Amy said, Becky, you are a fabulous Momma...Keith you are wonderful son. Love you all.

What a great idea for a party! I'll have to remember that for our four little hockey fans. You guys really know how to have fun!
And, yes, I can so relate to the shocking monthly food bill. Our boys already eat us out of house and home... and we're still three years away from the teenage years.
What a cool birthday! I might have to steal your idea. ;)
I love it! What an awesome party. I hope I'm as cool of a mom as you someday when Dima is big!
Sounds like he is going to be a great big brother and lots of friends to look up to as well.
What a great way to spend a birthday. WOW! Glad you survived and they had fun.
Hello my friend. Just getting caught up on the adoption adventures and antics of my Beck-o-rama. I can't believe I missed Alex's bday.. give him a big hug from me and Katie. Everytime I read your blog I realize how much I miss you guys!
I want to be in your family! I love hockey too! Yeah teenage boys eat like crazy! It's so funny because I always wonder where they put it all? You know? Anyway ... I'm so excited for you to the referral for the peanut. I'm just praying that you, Keith, Rachel and Troy get to travel together!
