Some "Me" Time

I think a lot of times we all forget to have "me" time. To do something YOU enjoy, are interested in or just some time to escape the craziness. One thing I've decided to do is take a photography class. I scrapbook, I love taking pictures but quite frankly, I'm not very good at it! I have a good camera but have only used the auto mode and am just tired of washed out pictures.

I'm taking a class one night a week at a local photo store/school. It's Digital 101 and is just teaching the basics of using an SLR. I hope to be able to take Digital 102 next as well as a flash class. It's 2 hours long - 2 hours of me time!

Today we took a field trip to Oakland Cemetary. It was quite cold. My poor fingers were frozen by the time we were done. It was a very cloudy day which was actually a good time to be in a cemetary. Oakland Cemetary is old... very old. I found the grave of a little boy who was born in 1879 and passed away in 1881. Margaret Mitchell is buried there (Gone with the Wind) and a few other notables. Confederate soliders are buried there as well.

So, while I take pictures NOTHING like Laura, I'm trying and maybe one day I'll be that good! I was pretty happy with the way a few of them turned out and decided to share. For some reason I have a serious mental block when it comes to f-stops and what I'm supposed to change it to so thank goodness for bracketing! I also got to play around with the white balance. The tungsten and white flourescent added some pretty cool effects to the pictures!

Hope you enjoyed! I'm trying to pass some time and not fall asleep because I have to pick up Alex and 4 friends from Homecoming at 11:30 and then drive them to one of the friends to spend the night. I volunteered for this job so that I can get all of the post-Homecoming gossip! :-) A little advice to all of you that will be parenting teenagers.... to get all of the gossip (including things they wouldn't normally tell you) pick them up from high-energy events like this and be very upbeat. Start asking questions immediately and I promise they'll spill the beans. You might hear things you don't want to know, but you'll definitely hear things that are important to know (e.g. who got in trouble, who drank before the dance, what girls are less than desireable, etc...). Being involved takes work, but it makes for a very strong and healthy relationship!

There is my public service announcement for the night!

Oh, one more thing... I am SO behind reading blogs! I've skimmed them but haven't had a chance to comment. I hope to do that tomorrow. If you can believe it, I've actually had to WORK this week. The horror! :-) Please know that I AM reading your blogs and thinking about all of you.

Hugs!
Becky

Homecoming in January? I thought it was in September-October everywhere; at least in the US.

Your pictures are wonderful! I'm glad that you are taking the photography classes now during your wait. Just think how much that will pay off when you go for trip #1 and trip #2 - because you'll have wonderful pictures to look back on your adventure. The memories will be so wonderful! I think ME TIME is wonderful! Thanks for sharing! Also the tips with the teenagers was great!

You did a good job on the photos. I would also like to take a photography class, but I've never found the time.

Thanks for the advice on the teenager gossip. I hadn't thought about it, but it makes sense. I'll remember that in many years to come.

Nice work! Now I just need to teach you how to do layout and design and I'll have you making books with me! I already have one "student" signed up (Nicole) whenever we get around to it...

With a little practice it is sooooo much faster than scrapbooking. And cheaper if I like the quality of the blurb books. My blog book is 126 pages for $40. Can't even come close to doing a scrapbook for that...not to mention you can't have 126 pages. We'll find out this week how good the quality is...it shipped yesterday. But I doubt it will make it tomorrow which I would need for the IA meeting tuesday.

Great tip on getting the gossip. I hope to be the kind of mom that the kids share info with. Hopefully I'll remember that in 10-15 years.

The pictures are great. Very impressed. I might have to look into taking a class myself. Everyone compliments my pictures but I know I could do a much better job. Hmm... Something to think about.

Good for you taking some "me time". You won't get any of that once Peanut comes home. Thanks for the advice on teenagers and getting the scoop. Your pictures are great.

Wow! What a great idea. Think of how much better peanut pictures you will be able to take now! I would love to have the info you are getting from that class. I too have carved out a little me time. I go across the street to a friends house either Tues or Thurs pm and we have a bible study - actually we are watching the Truth Project DVDs put out by Focus on the Family. They are SOOO good. This week's meeting was spent sharing crazy stories from our lives and laughing until our faces ached and sides felt like we'd been punched several times succesively. We all agreed that it was just what we needed. So, yeah for us and our respective 'me' times!

I totally agree with your comments about how to get the scoop from teenagers. It helps that our house has become the hang out for all of the gang so any event at school - they come here before and after.. and any dances.. they are here first and then after.. so we get to hear all the plans.. and then all the realities (plus I read what they all write on MySpace!).. :) Your pictures were awesome.
