One week from today
...I will be a nervous wreck getting myself ready in the morning, convincing myself I need to eat even though I’ll feel like I’m going to throw up.
...we’ll meet S from our agency who I feel like I already know!
...we will have to make the big decision of whether or not to get into the world’s smallest elevator at the Ministry of Education (MOE) or walk four flights of stairs.
...we will no longer wonder who the little boy is that is about to steal our hearts.
...we’ll know what orphanage we’re going to.
...we’ll get to meet the fabulous Dr. M that we’ve heard so much about.
...we’ll be hoping and praying that this little boy is relatively healthy so that we can petition to adopt him.
...we’ll no longer have to guess what color hair he may have or the color of his eyes.
...we’ll have to agree on a name and we won’t have to say “Well, let’s see what his Russian name is first”.
...will be one of the hardest, most emotional, most rewarding, most exhausting days of our lives. But I know it will be one we’ll never, ever forget.
So what does happen on our first business day there? I know I often assume that everyone that reads our blog is adopting, but that is far from true. Obviously, since I’ve never done this before I don’t know exactly what happens, but here’s the general idea.
~ Our driver and translator pick us up and take us to the CSS office to meet with S.
~ S talks to us a bit about what to expect at our appt with the MOE.
~ We head to the MOE and they present us with written information about our referral as well as a picture (which, rumor has, is typically very outdated).
~ We agree to meet the child and head to the orphanage.
~ Once at the orphanage, we meet with the orphanage director and/or the orphanage doctor. We ask lots of questions. Dr. M also meets us there.
~ They bring our referral in to meet us and Dr. M does a thorough evaluation.
~ We spend some time with our referral (how much time depends on the orphanage, the child’s schedule and the time of day)
~ We head back to our apartment and upload pictures/video and send medical info to Dr. Johnson at University of MN.
~ We try to sleep while deciding whether or not this is the little boy that is meant to be our son. (Actually, let’s rephrase that. Keith sleeps (snores) while I decide whether or not to kick him constantly and wake him up because it’s not fair that he can sleep when my mind is going six million miles an hour.)
So there you have it!
I’m pretty much packed, with the exception of shoes. That’s always the hard part for me. I was convinced I was bringing 2 pairs – one to wear with dress pants, one to wear when just walking around but I’m not sure I can only bring 2 pairs of shoes. That would be a record for me.
Happy Monday!
Becky

You have just leaped ahead of me, I put a few things out to pack, but haven't actually started yet. I know what you are feeling, we are feeling it too. The excitement, anticipation, anxiety all wrapped around some worry. Everything will be great. We will be thinking of you when we are in St. Petes. Enjoy your week.
Happy Monday Becky!!! How exciting, just one week to go..yippee! You will be great and everything will be just fine. Don't worry. Glad your packing is almost complete too. I think I'm going to have a hard time with the shoe thing too. :)
When you get back from trip one, please share your packing and question lists with me too, including what you wished you had brought and asked.
Have a good week...it's gonna fly by quickly.
Becky,
I just can not believe that you will be leaving in a week. I am so glad to hear that you are mostly packed. I bet you have not slept a bit. I will be thinking about you and family as you travel.

HI Becky~
It sounds like your well on your way! Good job on the packing and list making-you'll do great!
I brought 2 pairs of shoes- just like you are thinking about, and I didn't really need any more than that. You can get by with much less gear than you think you need, and you'll appreciate the lighter luggage. Good luck!
Becky - Love the last part about Keith snoring and you wanting to kick him - totally have been there!! Just take the 2 pairs of shoes. We actually could've taken less than we did and been fine on both trips. I was glad to have two pairs of shoes but glad I didn't take anymore. The lighter the better!! So excited for you!!
I say RIDE THE ELEVATOR. You may never ever be able to say you've ridden an elevator that small again. I'm glad I did it! ;)
7 days and counting. I agree, 2 pairs of shoes; but I know how hard that can be. Loved this post. Remember to take deep breaths.
I can't believe you have one more week until you meet your son. How long dop you expect to be in Russia for this first trip? Will there be 2 or 3 trips in all?
I will confess... I took 4 pairs of shoes plus flip flops on our first trip; I don't like to walk around barefoot in hotel rooms! It was so cold that I had to have fur lined boots (fake fur, of course). Then, I barely even left the hotel. My bag was way too heavy!
Try to bring 2 pairs of shoes (comfortable ones). It will save you space and you will realize that you didn't even need it.
I can't believe you are so close to meeting The Peanut!

Hi Becky! It sounds like you are really ready now!!! I will be nervous too when the time comes, but I know everything is going to be fine for you! We will be thinking about you and praying for a safe and fun trip! Take care...Teresa
Sounds like you are all ready to go! I would vote for the stairs- small spaces make me nervous. Besides, the walk up the stairs will make you a little winded and you won't think about being nervous- just if you are going to make it up the stairs or not! LOL!!
I am soooooo excited for you. What a wonderful time. Be careful, it is addictive and you will soon want to do this all over again!
Take the elevator!! We ride it to go up and then took the stairs to go down! I am glad you are done with the packing. We took 2 pair of shoes, but it was winter time, so we wanted a second one just in case one got wet. I think 2 is a good number! I can't wait to read your real experience about the day you'll meet the Peanut!
Thanks for stopping by at my blog. If I see another of the growth charts, I'll just get you one. It was only 100 rubles, I think! I haven't had a chance to read through your old posts, so I don't know if you're meeting you son or getting him to bring him home yet. How long will you be here? If I can do anything to help you out, please just ask. If you tell me where you're staying, I can probably then give you a bunch of restaurant/stuff to do pointers. These two weeks are busy with my wrapping up my current job, writing and grading final exams, etc. and my kids' end-of-year school stuff, but maybe we could meet up?
Sounds like you have the list down! I vote you take the elevator once but skip going to the bathroom at the MOE. :-0
It sounds like it is all coming together now. I am so happy for you both. Just remember to take a step back and breathe :) I can't wait to hear about your trip.
Great Post Becky! I especially liked reading what you will be like one week from today.
I'm so excited for you Becky and have been thinking about you all as you prepare to travel to meet your little one after all of this time and such a roller coaster of craziness along the way! I know you are super-excited and getting very eager to meet your little one in a matter of only days now! :) Yippee! I missed the boat on your last posts about questions to ask and things to take. I know you got lots of great suggestions, but feel free to email if you need anything at all. You're in my prayers as you pack and prepare, nerves and all! :)
Hey girl! Loved this post. I vote for taking the elevator up and the stairs down. Like Dede said, I don't advise using the MOE bathroom! OH...and while we're on the subject don't use the bathroom at the 8 dr. thing either. Blech!! There was no toilet paper, the toilet wouldn't flush, no soap and to top things off no paper towels or any towel for that matter!
You're going to have a great trip and you might actually be surprised at how NOT nervous you may be Monday morning. I thought for sure I'd be a basket case but that may have been one of my calmest days throughout our entire adoption journey. I totally trust "S" and knew she was looking out for us. More than that though, I felt in my heart that God was leading us to the child He had intended to become a member of our family and that for that reason alone, everything was going to be okay. Of course, seeing our son's photo and then meeting him in person only confirmed everything I already knew! I can't wait to meet you!!!!
Wow -- you are so prepared it scares me! I hope everything goes smoothly!
