We have entered the “monster” and bad dream phase. Andrew talks about monsters and his “list” every night before bed. He started out trying to see where he could go with it… planning his bad dreams in advance by verifying he could come sleep in our bed if he was scared. I was on to him and knew that as soon as the green light was given we were doomed. The crocodile tears cracked his daddy. “Of course you can sleep in our bed if you wake up with bad dreams or wake up scared.” And that, my friends, was the end of Andrew sleeping through the night.
Anywhere from midnight until three o’clock in the morning we will wake up to Andrew at the top of the stairs (we have a gate at the top with the master on the main) softly saying “Mommmmmyyyy… I’m scared. Mommy? MOOOOOMMMMMMYYYYY!!!!” I then kick Keith, tell him to go get his son and roll over and go back to sleep. With a child suction cupped to me.
In addition to a visit into our bed every night, Andrew sneaks into Alex’s room and hides under the covers 5 minutes after we put him to bed. We found him one night when Alex dumped a pile of laundry on his bed and it moved. Then a foot came out from under the covers. No, not just under the covers but Andrew had put himself under a full length body pillow, a sheet and a comforter. He was sweating up a storm (and fast asleep). Apparently, he’ll go to many lengths in order to sleep anywhere but his own bed.
In order to combat the monsters and bad dreams, I came up with a brilliant idea. Bad dream and monster spray! Take an empty water bottle, make a secret mix (of nothing but water) and then before bed, spray it everywhere. My brilliant idea worked for a night and then next night it was “MOMMMMMMMYYY” again. Oh, how I love being called mommy, even at 3 am.
A little investigative reporting has led us to the monster, the cause of the bad dreams and the reason for waking up. Callie the cat. The torturous cat. The cat who terrorizes Andrew (and who Andrew hissed at tonight). Keith said that when he went to get Andrew last night, Callie was laying in his door way with this devilish grin. It’s like a three ring circus around here!
How could anyone mess with a face like this?
Photos courtesy of a bag of topsoil and a sunny Sunday afternoon spent playing in a filthy wheelbarrow. I always knew boys liked to get dirty, but this boy was DIRTY. And you know what? I loved it… little boys rock!
Happy Cinco de Mayo!

Thanks for the laugh this morning. We went through the exact same thing with Liam when he was 3 and only recently discovered that our cat was to blame as well. (Now, the cat seeks out Lexi at night. You'd think I'd learn to put him up or out at night.)
I can't get over how handsome Andrew is. You're gonna have major trouble keeping the girls away once he becomes a teen!
I love the monster spray idea! I'm wondering though how you get back to sleep with a child suction cupped to you. I just can't and end up carrying Daniel back to bed after he falls asleep. Great pics - what a cutie!
Oh man that would so describe us. Me kicking the King Fish to get out of bed. When Small Fry was sick recently he was up and calling so much, we put him in bed with us. It's funny we all slept great! Probably because he was so exhausted he didn't move around much.
I love the monster spray idea.. very creative! Glad you figured out it was Callie!
The best cure for Monsters is a little brother or sister sleeping in his room! get busy!!!
Great story. Thankfully no monstrers here....yet. But we do have to listen to Colby retell us his whole day, and a few days before that. What a memory! I love the photos. We certainly have similar ones. They definitely love the dirt. Great idea for Monster spray. And agree with Kim, he is a handsom little devil.
