We started looking last night at the outlet mall closest to our house. We found the Samsonite Store and found some luggage we really liked. I like to call it grown-up luggage because it's a complete set of good luggage, something we've never owned. Keith and I are splurgers but for some reason, our common sense kicked in. Probably because spending over $500 on luggage is not a good thing to do when you have to pay six gazillion more dollars over the next 3 months for an adoption. Brilliant.
Please keep in mind, Keith hates to shop. He groaned on the way there about having to be in a mall but then HE was the one I had to drag out of stores! I had such an "ahhhhhh..." moment when we went into The Children's Place to get a few things for a friend. I looked over at Keith and see him looking at some of the little boy clothes. He had this ear to ear grin on his face. He didn't know I was looking, but it was just the best feeling in the world to know, deep down inside, he's excited. He is so reserved in his feelings because he has the "it'll be real when it really happens and then I'll be excited" outlook vs. the "I'm a dreamer" mentality I have.
Although we didn't buy luggage last night, we did buy some toys to take with us - 2 touch and feel books, a funky rattle/teething toy and a wooden puzzle. I also bought 2 pairs of mittens at The Children's Place for a whopping 50 cents a piece (orginally $4.99). Both pairs match the $1.99 sweater and fleece I bought a few weeks ago. :-)
I also found a jacket for myself. Wilson's Leather is closing their regular stores and shipping their merchandise to the outlet stores because they'll be keeping those open. In order to make room for the regular store merchandise they're having a massive sale. I bought the coat below (originally $200) for $37, and that includes tax. It is SO warm - suede outside, fur inside. Now I just need one of those big furry hats! :-)
So, today we resumed our luggage hunt. We went to Kohl's (they were having a buy one piece, get one free sale). We stared at luggage for an hour and Keith suggested we go to the other outlets. We drove up there, went from store to store and left empty handed. While eating lunch, Keith said "you'd better blog about this painful luggage process". :-) After we left the outlets, we headed back to Kohl's and finally settled on some middle of the road luggage. Not too cheap that it will only last us one trip, but not too expensive that we'll need to take a 2nd mortgage on our house.
Things are coming along (I think). Going to work on finalizing some lists this week and hopefully have the majority of everything done by the end of next weekend! 5 days until we know our travel dates..... Woohooo!
Have a great week!

It's actually really great that you settled for inexpensive luggage. Believe me, from experience -- expensive luggage is a RED FLAG for thieves! It basically says "there's good stuff in here"! After losing 3 matching brand new mega expensive bags and all of their contents many years ago I now only travel with mismatched cheapo stuff. I sometimes put tape around them or yarn and make them look really tacky to deter theives! Good luck on your trip!!
Good morning! I LOVE the new blog look!! You did an amazing job!
As you know, we went luggage hunting this weekend also. I can definitely empathize with your struggles and Norm can empathize with Keith's pain!! Wow...that was definitely an experience. We ended up getting 2 small bags from Target and Norm thinks we'll be able to cram everything in them along with our carryons. Hmmm....we'll see!
You'll be in our thoughts this week as you wait for confirmation on your travel dates!
As Valerie said, it's a good thing you didn't buy expensive luggage. We got ours at K-Mart on sale. I'm glad now that we didn't spend a lot on it, because the zipper of the outside pocket got ripped off on one of the conveyor belts in Atlanta! At least it happened at the end of our 1st trip!
Your shopping was very productive! Your coat was a super score! What a great price.
I like the 3 gift bags. I had piles of stuff for each trip in the baby's room, but large gift bags would have been much more organized.
I know you're excited about getting your dates this week!
luggageonline.com Great prices and good quality.
love the new look of the blog.
You are too funny, and I understand about your husband. Mine has the same mentality. They are going to be such supports in Russia, that is where they will shine in this whole process. I am so glad you blogged about the painful luggage process. It makes for good reading. Sorry that you had to suffer though. I echo Karyn- you will be in our thoughts too as you wait for the date!! I am dying to read about it, so post first thing!!
Denise
Glad you finally found some that works for you guys! We found ours at TJ Maxx and they've held up through a few flights thus far! :o)
My boys LOVED the touch and feel boks when they were littler- I'm sure they'll be a big hit for your little man, too!
I can give a luggage review. We needed new luggage too. I got tired of my broken down luggage with no handle. We really like the luggage pieces we got through Eagle Creek. It got great reviews and we have tested it ourselves when we flew to Hawaii and Disneyland. The carry on we love is called Eagle Creek Switchback 22I especially love this piece as it doubles as a carryon with handle and wheels and has a removable backpack attacked to the front of it. It came in handy for the airplane and as a daytrip piece. And at the airport you don't have to wear it..just attach the full backpack to your luggage. It's a pretty versatile piece..lightweight and easy to use. Here is a link to it on Eagle Creek's website. We also bought the Tarmac 25 as our second bigger piece we can check. and both pieces match in the palm green color. http://www.eaglecreek.com/bags_luggage/wheeled_luggage/Switchback-Max-22-20198/
Love the website colors. You are so very talented. I have been searching for a garmet bag for weeks. I need it for work and thought it would be good for trip #2. My hubby had the same look this weekend in the Carters outlet, looking at little boy clothes, he is also reserved, but I see an excitement in him as we are nearing the end of our paperchase. Good luck on Friday, and keep blogging it makes my day.
Becky -
The stuff that you got is so cute! I didn't know you guys were doing 3 trips is there a reason you are doing three trips? I know that Carey and Norman did because of their little boy, just thought I would ask you! I'm very excited for you and Keith! I pray that you'll get your referral soon! Thanks for making me laugh about the luggage search - that was too funny! Also I love the clothes at The Children's Place - we have an outlet in Albertville near my home with a Carter's outlet and that is where I shop for IV all the time! That and Sam's Club has the carter's footie pajamas for cheap and they are the same ones that are $30.00 at Macy's and you can get them for $6.00 at Sam's Club! What a deal! Which is why IV has 7+ pairs because heck - you can buy more when they aren't so expensive! Have a great day! Good to hear from you! Oh and I love your new layout on your blog it's beautiful!
I saw a cheap set at Costco the other day. Your bags will get beat up! So, don't spend a lot of money. Our bags got a little beat up with all the traveling.
Your blog looks great!
Myra
This a great blog post - love the wal-mart gift bags all decorated! We used a priority flat rate mail box for our stuff - how creative we all can be! Can't wait to hear about those dates.
Luggage and coats - woohoo!! You're getting close!!
Becky,
I have been faithfully following your blog, and am so excited for you and Keith that your time has finally come. I sent you an e-mail privately which may have been sent to Spam, but I did talk to Katrina at Catholic Services this afternoon...She is sooo nice.
Best wishes on your upcoming trip!!
Arrione Galvin
Love all of your cute finds! Owen has the same striped gloves from The Children's Place with a matching hat. So cute!!!
It's good you didn't "go all out" for your luggage. One of our bags broke our second trip!
I remember that "look" on Jim's face the first time I saw it. Isn't it the sweetest sight? Just wait until you see Keith holding your little boy! :O)
Oh my goodness...could you be any more organized little Miss optimistic dreamer? (your words not mine. I am so proud of you, and you have totally given me ideas with those bags. And those sales! That coat is awesome! My mouth fell open when I read $37. That is an area where you need to teach me to save! Great job Becky! Glad you found the luggage so you won't have to pack your things in black trash bags! lol! Can't wait to hear about travel dates!
Our son loves his touch and feel books...good choice! We bought a new piece of luggage for our last trip and they broke 2 zipper pulls on the way back so I wouldn't pay too much for the luggage. Another good site for luggage shopping is www.ebags.com
Sounds like you are ready to go. I like the bag idea. You might need to patton that one. I love the touch and feel books and they are still a hit with our daughter.
Glad you are preparing for trip 1. I understand how hard it must be spending that kind of money on luggage. We luckily were given some by Norman's relatives for a wedding present. We still borrow from our parents at times too!
like the header btw.
good thing you didnt spend too much. our kenneth cole luggage that we got for my shower, got damaged between the 3 trips and inter country trips. we started losing the handle off one (bring screwdrivers and duct tape) and the zipper broke on another. they were dirt soaked on another. i need new luggage now.
Wow. I'm just catching up on everyone's new after being out of town. Looks like I missed a lot of excitement with you. Congratulations on getting dates! I can't wait to follow along on your journey.
Love the new look of your blog!
oops...missed the sentence that said you did buy luggage. Thought you were still looking. :-)
